DETAILS

Did you know that the Earthquake and Mini-Quake rides originated in 1980? A group of VBC folks were riding their usual Wednesday route and there was an earthquake that day. They didn’t really feel the earth move but it was significant enough to name a ride after, hence the Earthquake Ride got its name. So know when you join this ride you’ll be joining a long tradition of VBC riders getting together on Wednesdays for a challenging midweek ride.

The Mini-Quake was designed in response to many riders wanting a slower, shorter version of the original Earthquake. The pace is usually about 13-14 mph and much slower on the uphills.

It is a popular route because of its safety profile, (bike lanes, wide shoulders and low traffic streets) and long stretches of flat sections mingled in with the hills. The first half of the ride is relatively easy except for climbing Lakeshore. There is a regroup at the top of Lakeshore so no rider is left behind. Then there is a nice bathroom and snack break at Felida Community Park

The rest of the hills come near the end of the ride.  There is a choice as you near the end of the ride.  You can finish up by riding up Grand via W. 33rd St. This is a very short but nasty steep hill. If you like to get the pain over quickly follow the ride leader up this hill as this is his preferred route. It is definitely the shortest route. If you prefer the hill fest suffering to go on a little longer but less steeply then go up E. McLoughlin Blvd with its freshly painted bike lanes. And lastly if you want to cruise along the waterfront down Columbia way all the way to S. Blandford Dr. you are welcome to climb that hill. While Blandford is the longest of the hilly options it is also completely in the forest which is nice on a hot day. Think of it as forest bathing on a bike. I suggest you try all three options.

Coffee and socializing is a must after this ride, 40+ years of riding together is something to celebrate.
