How to prepare for a night ride
Lights – Required: Front - white light. Rear - red light or reflector. Your lights will help you see the road and be seen by other road users. Test Ride I - Try out your lights on a short night ride. Can you see? Do they fall off?
Clothing – It's always colder in the dark. Wear more that you think you'll need. It's a slow ride so you won't warm up despite all those lights you're going to decorate your bike with. Wind protection can be a real butt saver. I use hand and toe warmers. Also hat, buff and gloves. Thermal everything. Wind-block/rain coat. Reflective stripes are groovy.
Test Ride II – If you’re new to night riding, try out your clothing at a slow pace at night. Warm enough? Can you still move or are you stuffed like the little brother in A Christmas Story? Bike Decor –Jim usually wins Best Bike, but maybe he'll slack off this year. Knock yourself out just in case.
Test Ride III –Try out your decorated bike before the real ride. Can you still pedal despite that fake Santa you hot-glued to your fender?
Notes:
Please arrive 15 minutes early to sign up and be a part of the announcements and safety briefing. Riders are expected to have read the Safe Riding Policy and be familiar with the Ride Style Definitions. Please direct questions to the ride leader or Road Captain. Helmets are required. Lights (front and rear), RoadIDs and cell phones are recommended. Make sure your bike is in good working order with the ABC Bike Safety Check. Please communicate with the leader if you decide to go off route or not return to the start.
Remember - we want to be awesome representatives for cycling and spread a love for our great sport locally by obeying all traffic laws and riding in a safe and courteous manner. Ride safely and have fun!
