Buddies List

need a bike
Author Last Post

Tamara,

More bike info.  I learned today that two supposed high end bikes are available at "Silver Linings Jewelry and Loan" @ 2122 NE Sandy Blvd, PDX for 600 and 800.  Of course everything else that has been said about a proper fitting and frame applies.

Tamara,

I have a carbon 58cm that I could be persuaded to let go for that.  It has recently been gone through by a pro-mechanic and is in excellent shape.
It is an old school 2006 Tinneno 2000.

Tamara,

As you might know, you can plug in your desired price range when searching on Craigslist. If your friend wants to stay under $500 or some other number, that will whittle down the number of ads you'll have to scroll through.

He can make it even more narrower if he knows the size bike that fits him. As a rough guide, there are any number of websites that will help calculate that, such as this: https://www.bikeradar.com/us/road/gear/article/road-bike-sizing-what-size-bike-do-i-need-40459/

Since he's looking in a relatively low price range, it would be important to have the frame checked for any damage prior to buying. This gets tricky if you're miles from a bike shop, and/or you have a seller who refuses to let the bike out of his sight. But I'd be cautious about buying a bike on Craigslist without having the frame checked out.

One last thing: A number of stolen bikes are advertised on Craigslist. Here's some help dealing with that: https://ask.metafilter.com/193363/How-to-NOT-purchase-a-stolen-bicycle

Hi Folks,

My friend Jon is looking to begin road biking with me, but not sure he is going to like it.
I'd like to buy him a solid road bike but not spend over $500. I want him to like biking  . . .
